Innovative LLM Technology by Smart Reporting on AWS Transforms Healthcare Reporting

In response to the growing challenges in healthcare, such as escalating medical knowledge and workloads, Smart Reporting has taken a significant leap forward. They have integrated large language model (LLM) technology into their SmartReports software, leveraging the AI capabilities of Amazon Bedrock. This innovative step aims to transform the reporting experience for healthcare professionals, enhancing the quality of patient care. An early look at this solution will be showcased at RSNA in Chicago, with its deployment in the US market planned for the first half of 2024.

Radiologists typically struggle with the limitations of manual reports and unstructured data that are not conducive to proactive treatment planning. With Amazon Bedrock’s technology, SmartReports will be able to offer:

  • A notable decrease in the time and effort required for report creation, thanks to automatic impression suggestion.
  • Improved organisational efficiency and research capabilities with structured, machine-readable data, resulting in a 60% enhancement in data quality for clinical decisions and a 150% increase in report accuracy and detail. [1, 2] Previous research has shown that structured reporting in pathology can lead to a significant reduction in patient mortality, by as much as 4.3% [3]. These new capabilities will soon be part of Smart Reporting’s offerings, with US customers able to access AI assistance in their SmartReports software from 2024.

Prof. Wieland Sommer, founder and CEO of Smart Reporting, stated: “We are always looking for ways to make radiology reporting faster and more efficient. We have been open to technology and vendors and are working agnostically to broadly integrate LLMs into our software. By building on Amazon Bedrock, we are able to leverage their state-of-the-art AI technology to enhance our radiology reporting solution. With automated impression suggestion, we will provide our customers with faster, better, and smarter reports that ultimately benefit patients.”

Dr. Razvan Ionasec from Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL added, “Healthcare professionals can benefit from seamless and efficient AI-enhanced reporting experience, spend less time on documentation and focus more on delivery of person-centered healthcare with improved outcomes.” Dr. Dominik Nörenberg also shared his perspective: “Integrating cutting-edge AI into our reporting paradigm has been nothing short of revolutionary.”

RSNA attendees in Chicago will have the opportunity to see Smart Reporting’s LLM-powered automated impression suggestion at the Smart Reporting and AWS booths.
