BMC Hospital Adopts geko™ Device as Standard in Stroke and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation

Sky Medical Technology Ltd, the parent company of Firstkind Ltd, has announced that the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) Hospital has officially incorporated the geko® device into its physiotherapy protocols for neuro and orthopaedic rehabilitation.

Within the wider BMC hospital group, the geko® device has rapidly gained recognition as an effective adjunct to standard treatments. It has proven particularly beneficial in addressing spasticity and improving joint mobility in stroke patients, as well as reducing swelling both before and after lower limb orthopaedic procedures. Additionally, the device supports deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prevention in immobile or critically ill patients.

The geko® is a compact, self-adhesive wearable device placed on the leg, just below the knee. It sends a gentle electrical signal to the common peroneal nerve once per second, activating the calf and foot muscles. This stimulation increases blood flow through the veins, arteries, and microcirculation, mirroring the effects of walking at 60% intensity—providing the benefits of exercise without movement.

Commenting on behalf of the BMC: Dr Haridas Rathod, Chief Medical Officer:

“At the heart of physiotherapy is the goal to enhance a patient’s functional abilities, promote self-reliance, and improve overall quality of life. The geko device delivers on all three. When used immediately following a stroke or orthopaedic surgery, adjunctive use of the geko device not only allows physiotherapy to begin sooner but enables continuation in the home setting. Its ease of use empowers patients to take control and self-manage their rehabilitation. The impact is transformative, resulting in better patient outcomes and optimised resource use. By reducing the hands-on physiotherapist time, the geko device generates significant cost savings for the BMC.”

From Curamatix Healthcare Pvt Ltd, Indian distribution partner: Mr. Ramen Mukherjee & Mr. Subhodeep Mukherjee, Directors:

“We are proud to partner with Sky Medical Technology in bringing the geko device to healthcare institutions across India. The successful integration of the device into BMC Hospital’s physiotherapy programmes is a significant milestone that highlights the device’s versatility and effectiveness in supporting stroke and orthopaedic rehabilitation. As a partner, we have witnessed first-hand how the geko device is reshaping patient care – enabling earlier mobilisation, faster recovery, and ultimately reducing the burden on healthcare systems. We are excited about the future impact this technology will have as we continue expanding its reach across India.”

From Sky Medical Technology: Bernard Ross, CEO and Founder:

“We are delighted that the geko device is an integral part of the rehabilitation approach at BMC Hospitals. This partnership is a testament to the growing recognition of the device’s ability to improve patient outcomes across a range of conditions, from stroke recovery to orthopaedic rehabilitation. By seamlessly complementing existing treatments, the geko device not only accelerates recovery but also empowers patients to take control of their rehabilitation journey. It is incredibly rewarding to see how our innovation is helping both patients and healthcare providers achieve more efficient, effective, and cost-saving outcomes.”
